Job Description

The Department of Corrections is looking for a qualified candidate to fill the position of a Substance Abuse Counselor for the Therapeutic Community Center located at the Adult Residential Center.  The job duties include the following:

  • Provide individual and group treatment for clients with substance dependence disorders in our Therapeutic Community (TC). 

  • Management of clients with mental health disorders by writing client Treatment Plans, Discharge Summaries, and documenting client progress to other professionals within the Department of Corrections or outside agencies. 

  • Hold clients accountable in a way that educates and provides understanding in to their self-destructive behavior. 

  • Attend weekly clinical meetings, monthly departmental meetings, and serves as clinical representative for the Therapeutic Community.    

Job Requirements

Associate’s degree in the following field(s) of study: Social Sciences: sociology, psychology, addiction counseling; criminal justice or related field is required along with one year experience working as a substance abuse and/or mental health counselor.

Bachelor’s or Master's degree in the following field(s) of study: Social work, Psychology, Counseling, Criminal Justice, or related field and one year experience working with criminal offenders in a correctional setting is preferred.

Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board licensure is required.  LCP, LPC, LCPC, and LCMSW is also preferred.

Excellent communication, documentation and interpersonal skills are required.  Incumbent must have leadership skills, analytical skills and be highly organized and able to maintain confidentiality.  Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Outlook. 

Incumbent must successfully pass a criminal history check and possess a valid driver’s license.
